Let me give you three things you can do starting today to start using the Internet to get your phone to ring in new clients and customers into your door.

1.      You should and must set up your own Google Places account. This is free to do and is yours for the taking. What a Google Places account will do for you is simple. It registers you with Google as a local business and “puts you on the map” figuratively and literally.

Google will then display your business when someone searching online is looking for your particular product or service. This is a no brainer. Just do a search on Google for ‘how do I get a Google places account’? And you will be given the set-up instructions.

1. You should and must set up an “opt-in” box on your website with an email auto-responder.  There are services that will automatically email anyone who “signs in” to your page – and they sign in using the opt-in box.  These services will design the box for you and help you set it up on your site.

This is essential to building your customer base online and marketing to existing customers.  You want repeat business, right?  If so, get your auto responder set up.  If you don’t have a website (like 70% of small businesses don’t  – amazingly!) than you need to get one.  Fast.

1. You should and must put up at least one video on YouTube with a link back to your homepage with the opt-in box.  Tons of people who search online use YouTube to search –  which means that even if you’re on Google, if they search on YouTube and you don’t have a video, they aren’t going to find you.  This is a free service also!

This is a lot of fun, and can really bring in a lot of traffic!  Make one or more short (1 ½ to 3 minute) videos, and get them up on YouTube.  Use the same keywords you use for your site, include your URL and give a little description of your business and what you can do for the customer.

These are three great first steps toward getting your business found on the internet.  There are many more things you can do, but you have to start somewhere!  Now keep in mind there are services that will help you and manage all your internet marketing for you – from the three steps mentioned above, to all your social media, your article marketing, video marketing, and even marketing via cell phones.

One thing you want to keep in mind, however, is that there are a lot of “Internet Marketing” companies that claim to be one thing or another, and you have to know who you can trust.

Be wary of anyone who claims they guarantee number one on Google.  You want results, yes, but the only one who can guarantee that is Google itself.  And keep in mind that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is just one small part of Internet Marketing – so look for a company that does more than just that.

Pay Per Click advertising is most commonly seen on search engines as a way for businesses to pay for viewers to find them.  And it is also how search engines make most of their money.  However, more and more websites are implementing pay per click advertising not only as a way to generate revenue for themselves, but also as a way to help businesses get their names out to the public.  Many businesses advertise on Google using Google Adwords, but more and more often people are utilizing Facebook as a pay per click avenue.

Pay per click seems simple at first, but a huge mistake many business owners make is to not test their advertisements to make sure they’re actually profitable.  In some industries this is difficult to tell, for example, in service industries where it is difficult to sell their product online immediately.  In other industries that can sell their product to their customer right away, they can tell that if an advertisement costs them five dollars per click, and every 10 people purchase a $50 product, they’ve broken even.  But there’s certainly more to it than that.

First of all, we recommend Google and Facebook as the best sites to utilize pay per click advertising.  Google is obvious because it’s the number one search engine online.  Facebook is becoming more and more popular and their pay per click advertising is still very inexpensive – so for a business owner just starting ou,t this is a great way to generate some immediate traffic to their website.

Either way, pay per click is a great way to generate fast revenue for your business if you do it right.  The catch is, Google and Facebook need completely different pay per click advertising strategies.

Using Google,you’ll target keywords.  Anyone searching for a particular keyword will see your advertisement.  It’s a very clear-cut, direct way of advertising to a specific target market.  However, if your target market involves certain demographics you will not be able to target those customers.  There are ups and downs to this strategy.  On the upside, you know that anyone searching for that specific keyword is looking for whatever they’re searching for specifically.  On the downside there are many variations to products and certain manufacturers will target different age groups men or women, and communities.

With Facebook you’ll target likes and interests.  When people create a Facebook profile they enter their likes and interests, as well as their locations, jobs, family, et cetera.  When you place an ad on Facebook you can choose what likes, jobs, locations, and demographics you want to target your ad to.  It’s a little more specific than Google.

Another benefit to Facebook pay per click is that people can click “Like” on an advertisement.  When they do this all of their friends will then see that they like your business. It’s word of mouth advertising on steroids!

The bottom line is that it definitely pays to implement pay per click advertising into your marketing strategy.  However, you need to make sure that you know what you’re doing or you hire someone who does.  Paid advertising is precarious, and you don’t want to throw your money away – you want it to work for you.

The first thing you have to take into consideration is what people actually search for.  A strong key word is the basis of a successful SEO strategy.  One huge mistake many people make is using their business name or personal name as their keyword.  By doing this only people who already know your business or personal name can find you.  In other words, people who have never heard about you before will never find you this way.

However, if you use a keyword that’s general and related to your business services – and you do your research to determine how many people search for it on a daily basis, implementing this keyword into your search engine optimization strategy will bring you a lot of really great results.  Without getting too in-depth, by following certain parameters when searching for your keyword, the likelihood of ranking on the top page of Google is very high.  On the flipside, if you pull a keyword out of thin air you might use a keyword that is either too competitive or has no one searching for it – and therefore no one will find you.

There are other aspects of SEO that you need to take into consideration.  In fact, there are aspects of it that you can’t actually control yourself.  For example, how much traffic is actually going to your site.  You can do the best you can, but you can’t force someone to go to your website.  By making your website more visible and more appealing to visitors, you will naturally generate more traffic.  This is why they call SEO “organic marketing.”
